PIANO COMPETITION

The Piano sections of the Toowoomba Eisteddfod provide pianists of all skill levels a performance opportunity with feedback from a specialist in the field. It gives the participants a goal to work towards that offers a greater focus for their practice in turn improving their skills overall.

Please read the General Rules and Division-Specific Rules carefully to avoid disqualification.

PIANO – GENERAL RULES
i. One piece only except in Championship Sections.
ii. Own choice of music.

OWN CHOICE MUSIC MUST BE SUBMITTED BY THE DEADLINE:


OWN CHOICE MUSIC DEADLINE WILL APPEAR ON THE TOOWOOMBA EISTEDDFOD HOME PAGE
No electronic submission of own choice music is accepted.
Please Note:
Competitors must submit a hard printed copy

OPTIONS FOR SUBMISSION:
• Post to City of Toowoomba Eisteddfod
    PO Box 60 Toowoomba Qld 4350
• Place in the locked box at the Empire Theatre Box Office (during normal business hours)
• Place in the locked box at McKenzie Music Etcetera
   37 Raff St, Toowoomba (during normal business hours)

SECTION CATEGORIES

a. Pop/ Jazz/ Movie selections are not permitted in this division.

100 Open PIANO CHAMPIONSHIP

101 Open PIANO CONCERTO

102 Open CHOPIN PIANO SOLO

a. Pop/Jazz/Movie selections are not permitted in the Year Solos.
b. Pop/Jazz/Movie repertoire may be played in:

  • Pop/Jazz/Movie Sections, Australian Sections – as Nationality not genre is the criterion;
  • Graded Solos as the reference to the syllabus is the criterion;
  • Duets/Trios as the number of hands on the piano is the criterion.

PIANO SONATA

a. Any movement from the works of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven or Schubert or a composer of equivalent standard from the Classical or Romantic period (excluding German Dances, Waltzes etc.).
b. Excluding Sonatinas.

POPULAR/JAZZ/MOVIE PIANO SOLO
a.
Music submitted may be a full score, an improvisation on a theme or a chord symbol progression.
b. Minimum of 16 bars.

133 Year 4 and under AUSTRALIAN COMPOSER PIANO SOLO

a. Age limits do not apply to Sections in this Division.
b. Grade levels are for any approved examination body such as: AMEB, Trinity, Royal Schools, ABRSM.
c. A competitor must not have passed an examination which is of a higher level than that of the Section in which they are competing.
d. Repertoire must be selected from a current Syllabus of an approved examining body at the Grade Level being entered.

a. Competitors may only compete in one group per section.

Competition is staged with respect for the organisers, audience, adjudicator/s and fellow competitors, thus maintaining the spirit and integrity of the eisteddfod movement.
